Rank glossary

Russia's athletic title system includes several tiers of state-awarded recognition. Below is a detailed description of each title, what it represents, and how common it is. Use the Ranks directory to browse athletes by title.

Master of Sport

Master sporta

The foundational title in the system. Athletes earn it by meeting performance standards at the national level: qualifying times, scores, or placements at Russian championships. Requirements vary by sport, but the bar is roughly equivalent to national-champion-level performance in other countries. Most recipients in this directory hold this title.

Master of Sport, International Class

Master sporta mezhdunarodnogo klassa

The second-highest athletic title, recognizing elite results at the international level. Qualifying criteria typically include medals at World Championships, European Championships, or top placements at major international competitions. Athletes holding this title are competitive on the world stage. It is significantly rarer than the standard Master of Sport.

Honored Master of Sport

Zasluzhenny master sporta

The highest athletic title in the Russian system. Qualifying results typically include Olympic medals, World Championship gold, or world records. This rare title represents the pinnacle of athletic recognition by the Russian state, and recipients are considered national sporting heroes.

Grandmaster of Russia

Grossmeyster Rossii

A title used primarily in chess and draughts (checkers) for players who have achieved the highest level of competitive mastery. In chess, this corresponds to earning the international Grandmaster title through FIDE norms and rating requirements. Few players reach this level.

Honored Coach

Zasluzhenny trener

A state title recognizing coaches who have trained athletes to outstanding competitive results. Recipients have typically coached Olympic medalists, World Championship winners, or record-setters. It is one of the most prestigious coaching recognitions in Russian sport.

All-Russian Sports Judge

Sportivny sudya vserossiyskoy kategorii

The highest officiating title in Russia's sports judging system. Officials who have refereed at the top levels of national and international competition and demonstrated exceptional knowledge and integrity receive this recognition.

Honorary Sports Judge

Pochotny sportivny sudya

A lifetime recognition for long-standing excellence in sports officiating. Officials who have served as judges and referees over many years, contributing to the development and integrity of competition, may receive this title. It is the rarest officiating recognition.
