About this directory
What is Masters of Sport?
Masters of Sport (Master sporta) is Russia's state-awarded athletic title system, originally established in the Soviet Union in 1934. The Ministry of Sport of the Russian Federation (Ministerstvo sporta Rossiyskoy Federatsii) awards titles to athletes who meet performance standards in their discipline, making it the primary way the state recognizes competitive athletic achievement.
Data source
All records in this directory are sourced from official publications of the Ministry of Sport of the Russian Federation. Each record is processed through an automated pipeline that transliterates names into English, translates sport and region names, and validates the data for consistency.
How titles are awarded
The Ministry of Sport of the Russian Federation defines performance standards for each discipline. Athletes typically must achieve specific results (qualifying times, placements at national championships, or competitive rankings) verified by their sport's national federation. The Ministry awards titles on a regular basis throughout the year.
The title tiers
The system recognizes several levels of achievement:
- Master of Sport: the foundational title, roughly equivalent to being a national-level champion. This is the most commonly awarded title.
- Master of Sport, International Class: awarded for elite results at international competitions such as World or European Championships.
- Honored Master of Sport: the highest athletic title, reserved for Olympic medalists, World Championship gold medalists, and world-record holders.
- Grandmaster of Russia: used primarily in chess and draughts for players at the grandmaster level.
The system also includes titles for coaches (Honored Coach) and officials (All-Russian Sports Judge and Honorary Sports Judge). See the rank glossary for detailed descriptions of each title.
